Just write
In one week it will have been twenty-five years since I published my first blog post.
I was prodded to write here tonight after watching a YouTube video by John Rogers, 5 Reasons to Start a Blog in 2026 (... or any other Year).
Rogers said he started his blog twenty-three years ago. He still posts at The Lost Byway.
The video was a good kick-in-the-pants to get back to writing here again. I had intended to, as I posted early last year shortly before turning sixty.
I'm now sixty-one. In another twenty-five years I'll be eighty-six, almost the age my dad is now.
I've become much more aware this past year that I can't keep saying, "Someday I'll get to that...." Whether it's the many and various books I want to read or the knitting projects or the organized house and files. Many of those same items were around (undone, unfinished) twenty-five years ago.
On his blog(!) Wait But Why, Tim Urban published a now famous series of illustrations of the human life span in years, months, and weeks.
Later, he published another post with additional illustrations, including one of how many books he had left to read. Not counting his reading for research/work, he stated:
I read about five books a year, so even though it feels like I’ll read an endless number of books in the future, I actually have to choose only 300 of all the books out there to read and accept that I’ll sign off for eternity without knowing what goes on in all the rest. [emphasis mine]
Last month I watched a YouTube video How Many Books Can You Read Before You Die?
It prompted me to calculate that if I read about one book per week or forty-eight books per year for the next twenty-five years, I have 1,200 books left to read.
But that one book per week is a bit optimistic for me right now given my current habit of watching YouTube videos rather than reading books....
